What to do when morale is low

Friday, February 19, 2021 by Cindy-Joy Smith | Uncategorized

Schools have reopened, and I've picked up a pattern this week amongst my students: many School-going students' morale seems to be low, and I suspect it has to do with being back at school.

We have all been through some tough and unusual times over the last year; please don't underestimate the effect this may have had on your child.

Suggestion:

In these first 2-3 weeks of school, don't nag your child to practice. Instead, encourage their creativity by allowing them to express their feelings on their instrument. Tell them to go make their emotion sounds, and let them experiment and explore.

Playing a musical instrument can be so healing in this regard, and you don't have to be able to play well to do this. Simply sit down to your instrument, and play around with the sounds. This will help your child gain an idea of musical expression whilst also giving them an outlet.

If your child doesn't want to practice their actual songs in these 2-3 weeks, encourage them to just do a small part of the song. I will be pleased, and they will get stickers, even if they can just play 4 bars well.

Let's take the pressure off, and get the fun back😊❤️ Music isn't a chore; so let's work together to ensure it is something your child will be able to make good use of for the rest of their lives.
